Apodida is an order of littoral to deep-sea, largely infaunal holothurians, sea cucumbers. This order comprises three families, 32 genera and about 270 known species, called apodids, "without feet". These sea cucumbers are vagile holothurians with an elongated shape (up to 3 meters for Synapta maculata ), worm or snake-like.

The order Apodida is a group of holothurians that are found in both shallow-water and deep-sea environments 6. Phylogenetic analyses showed that Apodida is sister to other orders of Holothuroidea 7, 8. Apodid holothurians lack tube feet and complex respiratory trees, making them morphologically distinct from other holothurians 2.
Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Apodida clustered with Elasipodida, forming two basal deep-sea holothurian clades. The divergence between the deep-sea and shallow-water holothurians was located at 386.93 Mya, during the Late Devonian. Mitochondrial protein-coding genes of deep-sea holothurians underwent relaxed purifying selection.
Overall, the current higher-level classification of Apodida was well corroborated. Within Synaptidae, the relationships (Synaptinae, (Leptosynaptinae, Rynkatorpinae)) are well supported. The monophyly of Chiridotidae was not supported and appears paraphyletic at the subfamily level.
